Ruth Inst. president calls for stricter sentencing for convicted s*x offender
Update! Shortly after sending this press release, we learned that the re-sentencing hearing for Fr. Michael Guidry has been postponed until September 19. We are appalled by this delay, which only prolongs the suffering of Guidry’s victims. We call for a speedy resolution of this issue: the maximum sentence allowable by law for Fr. Michael Guidry. In April, Fr. Michael Guidry pleaded guilty in Opelousas, Louisiana, to sexually assaulting a 15-year -old boy. Guidry was sentenced to seven years in prison, out of the ten-year maximum sentence. Fr. Guidry has requested, and been granted, a hearing to reconsider his sentence. The hearing will take place July 18. Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D., President of the Ruth Institute, will attend the hearing. Dr. Morse is an outspoken critic of clergy sexual abuse and cover up. She is also a passionate advocate for the victims of the sexual revolution, including victims of clergy sexual abuse. Morse believes the sentence should not be reconsidered. “The family and other victims had achieved some degree of closure and relief from the April 30th sentencing of Fr. Guidry. Going back into court undoes the sense of finality, and revictimizes those who have already been through so much,” Morse said. Morse explained: “When I say ‘victims’ — plural — I include Oliver Peyton, the immediate victim, who woke up to find Fr. Guidry performing a sex act on him. I also include Oliver’s family and the members of the community, who were shocked and disheartened by the revelation that the abuser, a priest in his 70s, had betrayed their trust.” “Lastly, I’m talking about the victims of child sex abuse everywhere who have been watching this case. Every new case, such as Fr. Guidry’s, can be a traumatic and ‘triggering’ event, especially for those who suffer PTSD symptoms. Every slap-on-the-wrist sentence revictimizes the victims. If the judge wishes to reconsider this sentence, I sincerely hope he will resentence Fr. Guidry to the 10-year maximum permitted by law." Morse noted: “No new fa

Ruth Institute Partners with LifeSiteNews on “Keep-Lords-Prayer” Petition to Pope Francis
In conjunction with LifeSiteNews, the Ruth Institute is promoting an on-line petition asking Pope Francis not to change the English words of the Our Father. PETITION: Holy Father, Please don’t change the Our Father!
LifeSiteNews is combining forces with the Ruth Institute on a petition of monumental significance for all Catholics…literally, the Word of God. As you may have heard, Pope Francis recently changed the Italian translation of the words of the Lord’s Prayer. And now, there are reports that he is considering changing the English translation as well. [See links below] This petition, therefore, politely, but firmly, asks the Holy Father to allow the status quo to remain as is with the Our Father. The proposed change is from the familiar, “Lead us not into temptation,” to “do not abandon us to temptation.” Dutch Biblical scholar Fr. Reto Nay explains that this new translation is not true to the original text: "The text of the Our Father is passed down to us in the New Testament, which was written in ancient Greek. The phrase "and lead us not into temptation" is contained both in Mt 6:13 and Lk 11:4 with identical wording. … This means that the wording of the prayer cannot be blamed on a transmission error or misunderstanding." Continuous repetition of the basic prayers has embedded these words deeply into our psyches. The effort required to undo those familiar words will disrupt our pattern of prayer, and cause confusion among the faithful. Pope Francis’ claim that the current translation is “not good” is his own private judgement. His opinion stands against the combined weight of tradition going back through St. Jerome’s translation into Latin, and all the way back to the Greek text of the Gospels themselves. And, one must remember that temptation, in itself, is not evil. But, that God may allow temptation to visit us (though never beyond our capacity to overcome it), both to allow us to show our love for goodness and to perfect us in prayer. Behind the scenes reports suggest that the change in the Italian translation were made solely on the authority of Pope Francis, with little opportunity even for discussion of such a momentous change. Attempting to change the Lord’s Prayer will create much con

On the Death of Great Men
by Jennifer Roback Morse This article was first published April 26, 2019, at Crisis Magazine. [Chuck Colson with Pope John Paul II] The death of a father is an earth-shattering event. When my father died in 1993, I felt disoriented. I had never been in a world that did not include him. I could feel myself move up the generational ladder. No one is above me any longer. No one who matters stands above me. When I tried to describe this to older people, they immediately understood. Old men spoke to me of the deaths of their own fathers, in the hushed tones normally reserved for the sacred. I thought of this when I learned that Father James V. Schall, S.J., had died. He was a father to me as to many. We have all just taken a step up the generational ladder. He won’t be there anymore. Younger people will look to us now at times when we would have looked to him. I first met Fr. Schall at an Acton Institute event in the 1990s. I was still teaching economics at George Mason and had two small children at home. I was delighted to find that Fr. Schall taught at Georgetown, more or less in my back yard. When I went to see him, he received me in the visitors’ lounge at the Jesuit Residence. After our conversation, he walked me out to my car. When I opened the back door of my car, he noticed the condition of the interior. I was ready to be embarrassed about the evidence of small children on the floor. But then he smiled and said, “A family car.” The love on his face was palpable. I can honestly say I had never felt so supported by any other academic colleague. I was, after all, surrounded by economists, believers in the pursuit of a self-interest that would somehow work out in the end to the benefit of all. Most of my colleagues were at best bewildered by the time I was taking to care for my children. Some were downright hostile. Little did I realize how much Fr. Schall, the care of my children, and economics would intersect. A few years later, we were together at a conference on the family. He asked the question, “What is owed
