Cleaned Transcript: Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse at California Family Council

00:00 – 00:51

Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse:

I’m Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, founder and president of the Ruth Institute—an international, interfaith coalition to defend the family and build a civilization of love. The battle over counseling freedom is really a proxy battle over a deeper issue: Are people born gay?

00:51 – 01:20

If people are born gay—as many believe—then the idea that someone can change would be like trying to change a Black person into a white person, or a left-handed person into a right-handed one. Therefore, any attempt to change is viewed as intrinsically harmful. This is the belief behind global efforts to ban therapy and counseling choice.

01:20 – 01:46

But I’m here to tell you: no one is born gay. The science is very clear—there is no “gay gene.” No one is born with a preloaded sexual arousal template that can never change. A person’s sexual arousal pattern has something to do with life experiences—for most, it relates to their spouse.

01:46 – 02:08

The idea that people are born gay has been a central argument in the movement to normalize LGBT rights. If they can prove it, they can use anti-discrimination law to protect identity and behavior. And it’s worked well for them. But it’s time to face the science: no one is born gay.

02:08 – 02:33

A massive human genome study found no “gay gene.” Identical twin studies reinforce this: if one twin is gay, the other often is not. That’s not the case for race. Gay is not like race. Gay is not the new Black.

02:33 – 02:54

The push to ban counseling is based on a radical claim—that people are born gay and cannot change. If that were true, we’d never find counterexamples. But we do—many of them, standing right behind me and around the world.

02:54 – 03:15

One counterexample is enough to disprove the claim that no one can change. That claim is dead—and should be buried. This is what the battle for counseling freedom is really about.

03:15 – 04:04

I urge you to look at the science, but also look into your heart. Ask yourself: have you ever had a troubling thought or feeling? You have choices about how to interpret it, how to act on it, and what to call yourself. Sexual identity is not a fixed destiny—it involves thoughts, identity, and behavior. And each of those includes choices.

04:04 – 05:27

That’s why counseling freedom matters. Not only because it helps people, but because it affirms something deeper: the truth about what it means to be human. We are not slaves to our feelings—we can choose what to do with them. Thank you for being here. Please stay to hear the testimonies of the amazing people standing with us.
