Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D, NY) suggests amnesty for illegal immigrants to solve our labor shortage problem. “That’s an insult to our intelligence,” said Ruth Institute President Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D.

Schumer said, “We’re short of workers. We have a population that’s not reproducing on its own with the same level it used to.”

“Yes, and who’s to blame for our demographic disaster?” Morse asked. “The U.S. fertility rate is down to 1.64, with 2.1 needed to replace current population. That’s quite a fall from 3.5 in the 1950s.”

“If Americans aren’t reproducing at the rate they used to, you can blame the Sexual Revolution,” she said. “We’ve lost 63 million since Roe v. Wade. But we’re also losing the descendants those aborted children would have had.”

“Thanks to the Sexual Revolution devaluing marriage, the marriage rate has also plummeted. In 1960, 45% of adults in their prime childbearing years were married, compared to 9% today. Those who marry are doing so later in life, and many are voluntarily childless.”

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce called the labor shortage “a national crisis.”

“That’s a crisis that won’t be solved by encouraging migrants to come here illegally,” Morse noted, “but by Americans marrying and having children of their own.”

“Ironically, Sen. Schumer’s party favors abortion up to the moment of birth, and the only kind of marriage it supports is same-sex marriage. Its absurdly misnamed Respect for Marriage Act would codify the Supreme Court’s Obergefell decision, mandating gay marriage nationwide.”

“Clearly, this isn’t the way to boost fertility, but to benefit LGBTQ activists, one of the Democrats’ core constituencies.”

“Sen. Schumer should rethink his ‘solution.’”Learn how to counter falling fertility at the Ruth Institute’s Demographic Winter Resource Center.
