Tip: Protect yourself when your spouse or other loved one starts criticizing you. Imagine yourself inside a giant bell-shaped jar, or wearing a flak jacket. You can observe what is going on around you, but the jar or jacket protects you from anything harmful coming in. This gives you some psychological space to begin listening. (Tip #63 from “101 Tips for a Happier Marriage.”)
