Real Marriage Delivers the Goods that Fake Marriage Can’t

January 28, 2026, Lake Charles, LA– “The Ruth Institute is fully on board with the Greater Than campaign to win back the true meaning of marriage,” said Ruth Institute founder and president Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D.

Spearheaded by Them Before Us, Greater Than launched January 28, 2026, as a commitment to overturn the 2015 Supreme Court decision Obergefell v. Hodges, which imposed same-sex “marriage.”

The Ruth Institute joins a coalition of think tanks, faith leaders, lawyers, state policy organizations, and everyday citizens united by one mission: to defend children.

“The Ruth Institute is completely committed to this issue,” Morse said. “We were right in 2008 when I campaigned for California’s winning Proposition 8, which defined marriage as between one man and one woman. We were right when we defended marriage in states across the country between 2009 and 2015. And we’re still right in 2026.”

“During those years, we created a brochure called ‘77 Non-Religious Reasons to Support Man/Woman Marriage,’” Morse said. “Those reasons have only grown stronger. We slid right down the slippery slope from redefining marriage to redefining parenthood, to now, even redefining what it means to be a man or a woman.”

Ruth Inst. Senior Research Associate, Fr. Paul Sullins, Ph.D., has looked at the data. Children growing up in intact biological parent households fare better than any other family structure. Those who demonstrate the most serious emotional problems are children of same-sex parents.

“Mothers and fathers each have a unique value that is irreplaceable to children. Their benefit to society, as a whole, is priceless,” Morse said. “Men and women are not interchangeable, and two moms or two dads can never offer children the same benefits as their own mom and dad.”

“Kids need their mothers and fathers. This fact places legitimate limits on adults,” Morse stated. “Society needs to be crystal clear on this point. The campaign to redefine marriage claimed to be about helping the underdog. In fact, that campaign created serious confusion about the most basic needs of the most vulnerable, namely innocent children. The needs of children are Greater Than the desires of adults.”

“The Ruth Institute is not going anywhere, and we won’t stay quiet. The Obergefell decision has denied benefits to a generation of children. It’s time for that injustice to end. Obergefell will go the way of Roe,” Morse said. “It’s only a matter of time.”
