I have been trying to say for some time that redefining marriage is not a small deal, but really a big deal, with changes far beyond what the advocates claim for it. Here is a small piece of evidence on this point: In the year since the Iowa Supreme Court discovered a right to same sex marriage in its constitution, 2020 same sex weddings were performed in Iowa. However, less than half, only 885, were Iowa residents.
This means a change initiated in Iowa will have ripple effects far beyond Iowa. These out of state couples will start to show up and demand changes in the laws of their home states, changes that the residents of those states do not want. Gay divorce, for example, as we have discussed on this blog and in podcasts before.
A small thing, maybe, but significant.
